Installing the Firefly:

Wheelchair Requirements: We offer attachment clamps fitting tubes with the following diameters:

25.4 mm (1 inch)

28.8 mm (1.125 inch)

30.5 mm (1.2 inch)

31.8 mm (1.25 inch)

Guidelines and Recommendations: There must be enough space to install two attachment clamps on each side of the two front wheelchair tubes. The minimum required tube length is: 2 x 30 mm for each of the two clamps, plus a vertical distance of at least 80 mm between the two clamps. The clamps can be mounted with the balls on the inside or the outside of the frame.

On some wheelchairs, the castor barrels form an obstacle to installing the clamps with the balls on the outside of the frame.

Installation instructions:

  1. Mount the four attachment clamps; two on each of the front tubes of the wheelchair. Each clamp has an extension with ball.

  2. Attach the wings on the steering column by using the bolts.

  3. Adjust the length of the rods on the two bottom connection wings by either screwing the extension bolts in or out. Each of the four connection wings of the Firefly has a ball socket. The ball on the clamp fits in the socket and the bolt keeps the ball-joint secured.

  4. Fit the socket of the lower wings to the lower clamp balls, and secure the ball-joint with the bolt.

  5. Adjust the length of the rods on the two upper connection wings.

  6. Fit the socket of these wings to the upper clamp balls, and secure the ball-joint with the bolt.

  7. In order to ensure that the steer of the Firefly is in the optimal position for the user, fine-tune the angle of the steering column by changing the attachment angle of the wings.

  8. By changing the length of steering column, the height of the steer can be configured for each user. The length of the steering column can be adjusted by sliding it up to 10 cm in or out.

To facilitate the installation on the widest possible range of wheerchairs, each attachment clamp is provided with an extension with ball. In addition, the length of the rods on the connection wings can be adjusted.

Configuring the Firefly for the User:
The Firefly can be adapted according to the height of the user and his/her arm length. This involves adjusting the length and angle of the steering column. For a detailed description of how to carry out these adjustments, see the installation instructions.

To ensure that the Firefly is correctly configured for the user, verify that:

  1. The users’s left arm is nearly fully extended when you rotate the steer to the right.

  2. The users’s right arm is nearly fully extended when you rotate the steer to the left.

  3. The castors should between 1 inch (2,5 cm) ~ 2.5 inch (6,5 cm) off the ground.

  4. The front wheel should be approximately 2 inch (5 cm) in front of your feet or 6 inch (15 cm) in front of your foot rest.
